Matthew (Matt) Newell is MFA’s Associate General Counsel. Matt is responsible, along with other MFA counsel, for monitoring, analyzing and commenting on regulatory and legislative developments affecting the alternative investment industry.
Matt previously worked at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP in Washington, DC, where he practiced in the firm’s Asset Management Group, representing registered and unregistered investment advisers including hedge fund and private equity fund managers, registered investment companies and other industry participants. As part of his practice, he assisted with the organization and offering of onshore and offshore alternative investment vehicles, advised on matters relating to such vehicles, responded to inquiries and examinations by the SEC staff and structured investments in both registered and unregistered funds. Prior to joining Willkie, Matt worked in the Asset Management Group at Shearman & Sterling LLP in Washington, DC. Matt received his Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University in 2001 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2004. He is a member of the New York and District of Columbia bar associations.
