MFA knows that success as a trade association in Washington only comes with continuous visibility and a consistent message on Capitol Hill. MFA is a well-recognized resource for information and advocacy on Capitol Hill and beyond. In order to maintain its prominence as the Washington-based trade association that represents the global alternative investment industry, including hedge funds, and to protect the alternative investment industry from harmful legislation, MFA pursues the following initiatives:

  • MFA meets regularly with policy makers and their staff. To date MFA has completed over 200 meetings on Capitol Hill and has held two executive briefings.
  • MFA testifies at hearings on Capitol Hill on a variety of issues, including systemic risk, pensions, and taxation:
    • March 13, 2007—MFA Director and Clinton Group Founder and CEO George Hall, MFA Member and Taconic Capital Advisors Co-Founder and Principal Kenneth D. Brody, and MFA Member and Kynikos Associates Founder and President James S. Chanos testified before the House Financial Services Committee for a hearing entitled “Hedge Funds and Systemic Risk in the Financial Markets.”
    • September 26, 2007—MFA Member and Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP Founding Partner, Daniel Shapiro testified before the Senate Finance Committee at a hearing entitled Offshore Tax Issues: Reinsurance and Hedge Funds.
    • September 26, 2007—MFA Member and President and CEO of Campbell and Company, Inc. Theresa Becks testified before the House Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management at a hearing on the reauthorization of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission
    • September 6, 2007 – MFA Member and Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP Founding Partner, Daniel Shapiro testified before the House Committee on Ways and Means at a hearing entitled Fair and Equitable Tax Policy for America’s Working Families.
  • MFA supports the publication of two Congressionally-mandated studies by the Government Accountability Office on derivatives and hedge funds, and is working to ensure that any such studies are performed in a fair manner.
  • MFA works in close cooperation with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to assist them on their pending studies on hedge funds, and derivatives and pensions.
  • MFA hosts congressional staff visits to hedge funds as part of its educational program on hedge funds.
