The New York State Common Retirement Fund recently allocated $300 million to a hedge fund for an emerging managers mandate.  According to a report from Infovest21, the hedge fund’s emerging manager portfolio focuses on “newer firms with assets below $500 million and on women-and-minority-owned fund managers.”

The pension, which has $160.7 billion in assets, had $6.1 billion in its absolute return portfolio at the end of FY2013.  That portfolio consists of more than 30 investments and represents 3.8% of total assets.  For the fiscal year, the absolute return program returned 8%, topping the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index return of 2.7%.
